you that in order to improve English language skills of our students, we are
introducing the ‘Assessment of Speaking and Listening’ tasks from classes VI –
VIII.
The break up for SA-1
would be as follows:
Theory - 50
marks
Speaking - 05 marks
Listening - 05 marks
Total - 60
marks
Your ward has already

FAQ’S REGARDING ASSESSMENT OF SPEAKING AND
LISTENING SKILLS
1 .What is the
objective of Assessment of Listening and Speaking skills?
Ø
Speaking and Listening are considered to be
the essential skills of real life.
o
Effective spoken communication
(speaking skill) requires being able to express your ideas and views clearly,
confidently and concisely in speech, tailoring your content and style to the
audience and promoting free-flowing communication.
Ø
Listening skills are ways to help you
listen to something more effectively and be able to comprehend the message
being communicated.
2. When will testing of
speaking and listening skills be conducted?
Ø It will be a continuous process as a classroom activity. But
these skills will be tested both in SA I and SA II.
3. Will there be any
separate timetable and specific syllabus for testing of speaking and listening?
Ø No, it has to be done as part of scholastic transaction.
4. How can the students improve their testing of speaking and listening skills?
Ø By continuous practice in and outside the classrooms.
5. What would be the criteria for assessing listening and speaking?
Ø Listening: Comprehension, understanding and application
Ø Speaking: pronunciation, diction, tone, clarity and
coherence, flow of ideas
6. How will the listening activity be conducted in the class?
Ø An audio track will
be played on the smart board and a worksheet will be distributed on the day of
the activity before playing the track. The track will be played twice and the
students will be assessed according to their performance.
7. Is it mandatory for every child to go through the assessment?
Yes, as it accounts for 10 marks.
8. For the speaking activity, will the child be given the topic on the
spot?
Ø
The child will be given a topic in
advance by the teacher, not focusing on rote memorization, but to create a
comfortable environment so that the child reads about and is familiar with the
topic.
9. For how long will the speaking activity be conducted?
Ø
The speaking activity is conducted
in three phases.
Ø
First is the Introduction Phase in
which the teacher may ask general questions like “What are your likes/ dislikes?”,” Which is your favorite programme”, “ Which is your favorite leisure activity?”.
Ø
The second is the Presentation
Phase, where in the child speaks about the topic (already announced
beforehand).
Ø
The third is the Question Round,
wherein the child is asked a question by the teacher related to the topic.
10. What is the type of questions asked for the assessment of listening
activity?
Ø
Objective type questions are asked
in the worksheet thus prepared by the teacher. There are no subjective type
questions.
11. Can a child get a second chance to improve the score?
Constraints of time and a sense of
fairness towards others will prevent a teacher from giving a second chance. The
child has nothing to fear as the teacher will create a warm and friendly
environment during testing.
Every child must be present for the
activity on the day assigned. (Except medical cases.)
