18TH ANNUAL INTER SCHOOL DEBATE 2012

 

The Air Force School held its 18th Annual Inter School Debate 2012-13 on 19th and 20th July 2012. The course of the event was spread over two consecutive days. Day 01 was the Preliminary round and Day 02 was the semi-final and final round.

 

DAY 01

On the first day, The Principal Ms Deepika Thapar Singh welcomed the august gathering. There were 36 schools who were the participating team. The challenging part of the competition was the extempore format. The teams were divided into two pools and the topics were given to them on the spot with a preparation time of 45 min. The moderators for the day were Mr Rohan Batra a dynamic member of the Delhi University debating circuit and Mr Pranay, from IIM Kozikode. They are the winner of the prestigious debate competition at a University level.

 

Thought provoking and stimulating topics were given to stimulate the minds of the young orators. There were six topics for the 1st day, they were as follows:

  1. 1.A country that does not treat sports at par with academics is destined to be an Olympic under achiever.
  2. 2.Aamir Khan’s Satyameva Jayate is an escapist attempt to sell Social Reality as TRP.
  3. 3.MMS and Facebook have opened the floodgates of Internet irresponsibility.
  4. 4.We are a nation who browses and have forgotten how to read.
  5. 5.Those who forget History are condemned to repeat it.
  6. 6.That India should be a federal form of government.

 

Out of the 36 school, 11 schools were selected for the semi-final round which was announced at the end of the day.

 

The semi-finalists were:

  1. 1.DPS, RK Puram
  2. 2.Mother’s International
  3. 3.Bal Bharati Public School, Noida
  4. 4.Amity International, Saket
  5. 5.The Air Force School
  6. 6.Mayur Public School
  7. 7.Modern School, Barakhamba
  8. 8.DPS, Rohini
  9. 9.Hansraj Model Public School
  10. 10.Sarla Birla Gyan Jyoti, Guwhati
  11. 11.Sanskriti School

 

Judges selected one stand by school

  1. 12.Springdales, Dhuala Kuan

 

For the semi-finalist team, the topic for the next day was announced at the end of the day.

The topic was:

“India priorities the corporate hocus rather than its grassroot activists”.

 

 

DAY 02

 

The semi-final round was held as per the classical format, where all the 10 teams debated on the motion and only two teams made it to the final round, where each team was tested across three styles of debating

(a) Extempore              (b)  Turncoat                             (c)  Classical Format

 

The event was held in the Air Force Auditorium at 9.00 AM.

 

The Chairperson was Mr Pranab Mukherjee. He shed light on the important debating skills & motivated the participants through some heart wrenching words.

 

The speakers spoke extremely well and passionately & the whole event was interesting and enlightening with glimpse of cross questioning and some good exchanges between the speakers.

 

Modern School, Barakhamba Road and DPS, RK Puram made it to the final round, where the two teams were tested across three styles of debating.

 

 

Extempore style , Turn Coat and classical style

 

Results:

Modern School, Barakhamba Road won the trophy and were declared the best team. DPS, RK Puram was the runner-up, followed by Sanskriti School, as the third best team.

 

Individual prizes:

Best Interjector was Viraj Gupta from Sarla Birla Gyan Jyoti, Guwhati.

Best Speaker Proposition was Arshia Ticku from Mother’s International school.

Best speaker Opposition was Vedantha S Govi from DPS, Rohini.
