KHEL UTSAV 2020
Don’t practice until you get it right, practice until you can’t get it wrong. –Alex Morgan (U.S. Women’s National Team Soccer player)
And we did practice, online, that too. And had so much fun. This being a new era of learning and doing new things in a new way, we went ahead with the exciting idea of having our annual sports meet virtually and nailed it.
The Junior Wing of TAFS celebrated the annual event, Khel Utsav, with childish eagerness and enthusiasm on 18th December 2020. Aptly themed, ‘Ojas’- Vitality of Mind and Body, the month long sports extravaganza which began on 23rd November, culminated with a live show of the children performing coordinated dances and drills to rhythmic music.
The day began with the Headmistress’ message stressing upon the importance of regular physical activity in the proper growth and development of children and doing it together as a family.
“Run when you can, walk if you have to, crawl if you must; just never give up.” – Dean Karnazes. (author and American ultramarathon runner) So, why let anything dampen our sporty spirit?
Highlighting the overall well being and happiness of children by facilitating their involvement and participation in sports has been the main aim of conducting this event online in spite of the challenges put across by the ongoing pandemic.
The KG children danced together wearing cute red dresses and the Class 1 children did the ‘Pogo’, casting spells with their magic wands.
Class 2 children performed some stretching and twisting exercises using decorated plates while the children of Class 3 showed us some neck exercises, yogasanas and meditation.
Children of Class 4 did a PT Drill using red coloured balls and Class 5 children danced to Bhangra beats.
The event was well organized and we can proudly claim that the costumes and accessories were resourcefully planned and the props were made by the children and taught to them in their online craft classes.
An array of simple, enjoyable activities were offered to the children at the beginning of the Khel Utsav month, to choose one as an individual sport, (Eg. Skipping the rope, dribbling/tossing a ball, skating/Hula Hoop, balancing a book, aerobic step exercises, etc.), to be practiced every day and a video recording of the end result sent to their Class Teacher.
These activities achieved the objective of developing basic movement skills, agility, body balance, coordination, patience and focus.
Addressing the parents and students on this occasion, Principal ma’am congratulated the students and thanked the parents for their cooperation and constant support at each stage which helped make this event not only possible but a great success. Ma’am encouraged everyone to consider the benefits of playing sports and to remember that it is the best way to learn values, resilience and build character.
As Nelson Mandela said, “It always seems impossible until it’s done.” We did it!
