READING CAMPAIGN – JUNIOR SCHOOL(February)

READING CAMPAIGN – JUNIOR SCHOOL(February)

“Once you learn to read, you will be forever free.” – Frederick Douglass

In continuation with the campaign of reading launched by Ministry of Education, TAFS Junior wing continued with the readathon in the month of February as well.

Unlike speaking, reading is a skill which does not come naturally to

humans and needs to be learnt. Reading is an interaction between the text and the reader, which involves not just understanding the meaning of the words but also grasping the multi-layered meaning behind the text. It requires continuous practice, development and refinement.

We at TAFS organised various reading activities this month also which not only created excitement amongst the children but also engaged them with language-based activities in their everyday life without realizing it.  To develop the habit of reading, we made them aware of the online school library available on school website so as to let them give access to a variety of simple and interesting storybooks that are illustrated with attractive pictures. Children of 3,4 and 5 also shared their book reviews in pictorial and attractive forms. Activities like read-aloud, loud reading, discussions on books read by them, role plays, word wall etc. were conducted in the online classes.

Classes 1&2 did word wall activity with an intention to repeatedly use golden and commonly used words used to greet and express gratitude. They were also encouraged to read the written material around them like on wrappers of biscuits and toffee posters advertisements on the roadside, wall, storybooks at home etc.

Classes 3,4 & 5 conducted various JAM Sessions on the folk stories they had heard from their grandparents. They enjoyed sharing their folklores with the other children of the class. The zeal and passion were clearly visible in their keenness to share their stories first.

As a part of the Book Week, Children of classes 1-5 did an activity of Judge a Book by its Cover. Children designed a book cover for their favourite book in the language of their choice, both children and their parents were very happy and enthusiastic to draw cover of books in their mother tongue as this was an opportunity for them to connect with their mother tongue. Students had to read the book first to design the cover relevant to the content. Draw a story activity was organised for all the children of TAFS Junior wing in which they listened to a story and drew their favourite character /scene from the story, this helped them to comprehend the story well. Our endeavour to make children learn and discover joys of reading will continue.

    SCIENCE WEEK ACTIVITIES

SCIENCE WEEK ACTIVITIES (21st-25th February 2022)

“The important thing in science is not so much to obtain new facts as to discover new ways of thinking about them.”      - William Lawrence Bragg

To help children develop a scientific temperament some activities were organised for students of classes 1-5 as part of the week long celebrations. The theme for this year’s Science Week Activities was 'Kitchen Science'. The kitchen is indeed a great place to ‘study by doing’ and science has always been about doing and observing.  Simple experiments were assigned to our students using materials straight from the kitchen, easily available and fun to do!

Class 1 students chose to observe- why do somethings float, while others sink? This is a question which all children often wonder about. The budding scientists of Class 1 decided to find out through a simple experiment using curry leaves, orange peel, some pulses, a lemon and a bottle cap and carefully wrote down their observations on a chart. It was indeed a ‘Eureka’ moment for them.

Class 2 students followed the scientific theory behind solubility of different substances found in the kitchen. In this experiment, students observed which substances dissolve in water and which do not.  Using water, salt, sugar, oil, coffee powder, pepper they used different glasses and mixed these items one by one to see the results. With this one simple activity they were able to witness first-hand the concept of soluble and insoluble materials.

The students of Class 3 did the Apple Browning Experiment in which they chose apple to understand the process of oxidation. An apple on being cut turns brown in no time. They cut the apple into six slices and placed it in different liquids like air, salt water, lemon juice, vinegar, milk and baking soda. Hourly observations were neatly tabulated and they understood that while lemon juice which contains Vitamin C will prevent the apple from browning, Vinegar on the other hand does not have Vitamin C and therefore it accelerated the process of apple browning.

Class 4 students soaked certain pulses like chick pea, kidney beans and raisins in both- water and salt water, separately. They observed and concluded that different items when soaked in water absorb it and their size increases. When we put them in salt water they shrink. What a wonderful way to learn a complex process!

The senior students of Class 5 made paneer at home from milk. They understood the scientific principle, behind the coagulation of milk using something sour like a few drops of lemon juice or vinegar. The milk curdled into paneer, it was tied into a soft cloth and pressed down with a heavy weight in order to remove the excess moisture. The students understood the chemical irreversible change that took place on making paneer from milk while doing this process.

The week long activities provided all students with the opportunity to develop abilities of scientific enquiry. The science week culminated with the thought that science is a beautiful gift to humanity. It was a week of fun based learning experience.

EBSB- PROJECT WORK ON SIKKIM 2021-22 FOR CLASSES 1-5

EBSB- PROJECT WORK ON SIKKIM 2021-22 FOR CLASSES 1-5

      (08-24 Feb 2022)

Under the annual EBSB project work initiated by CBSE, this year the students of classes 1-5 again took part in several activities planned for them by their teachers. The theme paired states for the year 2021-22 are Delhi and Sikkim.

The students of class-1 learnt about Red Panda, state animal of Sikkim, through an Art and Math integrated activity of making headgear using paper and colours.  The little ones enjoyed the craftwork which was demonstrated by their teachers and wore their cute Panda headgears enthusiastically.

Class 2 children brought shapes to life with a mindful activity integrating Math and Art with prayer flags of Sikkim. The students made their own prayer flags with different shapes, filled with words like love, respect, integrity, strength, wisdom, gratitude, compassion etc. They used vibrant colours for  their shapes. In the process, this activity brought them closer to understanding that traditionally, prayer flags come in sets of five( one in each of the five main colours) and that the prayers are like thoughts that are believed to be blown by the wind to spread into all-pervading space.

As a part of Art and EVS Integrated activity, students of class 3 tried to capture the scenic beauty of Sikkim through their art work. They were mesmerised to learn about how nature has blessed Sikkim with beautiful tea gardens, snow-capped mountains, lakes, waterfalls and colourful valleys. The artwork made by the students were truly interesting as they tried to show as many things as possible about Sikkim using bold and bright colours. They also learnt about ‘Pagoda’ and it’s structure, symbolisation etc. in this activity.

Students of Class 4 designed ‘Sikkim Pop- Up card’, integrating Art with EVS and English . The ‘pop up’ was something important related to Sikkim like a monastery, Kanchenjunga mountain, Bumchu festival, costume etc. pasted in an artistic way on the card. It was a great learning experience for the children as they observed and selected  from a  variety of various pictures related to Sikkim, in order to make their Art ‘pop out’. The information gained was also written down in short notes on their cards.

Class 5 students studied the map of Sikkim and worked  skilfully to  mark the outline of map of Sikkim with strings, jute , newspaper etc. and filling it up with lots of pictures, hence creating attractive and interesting collage work.  They also explored the various tourist places, cuisine, culture etc of the beautiful Himalayan and presented the information in an attractive colourful manner with creative captions! A true integration of Art, EVS and English was achieved as all the students participated with full enthusiasm.

          FEBRUARY 21, 2022

The English Department celebrated the International Mother Language Day on February 21, 2022 with gusto. Students of Classes VI-VIII used vocabulary from their Mother Tongue. Words that were simple, laden with meaning and in common usage were spoken in different languages. The richness of the languages was brought out by the use of idioms and phrases that conveyed a wealth of meaning. The activities generated a great interest in the diversity of expression. Students chose to reveal their language skills by making presentations, singing songs and recording videos.Folk songs were extremely popular. Some of the languages spoken and discussed were Bhojpuri, Haryanavi, Telegu, Kannada, Malayali, Pahadi, Nepali and Rajasthani. Students who were learning to read and write in their mother tongue shared their experiences.  UNESCO’s theme for the year: Using technology for multilingual learning: Challenges and opportunities was off to a good start with all participating with a spirit of language explorer charting territory known yet somehow relegated to the background

VEGETABLE PRINTING ACTIVITY : CLASSES UKG-III

VEGETABLE PRINTING ACTIVITY : CLASSES UKG-III

Vegetable printing is a creative art for children, that helps in development of creativity and fine motor skills. A vegetable printing activity was organised for classes (UKG -3) during the week (14 -19 February 2022) as we believe that learning becomes enjoyable and memorable when combined with a fun activity.

The students were introduced to different kinds of vegetables, their colours, textures, shapes and nutrition they provide. They dipped vegetables like lady finger, capsicum, beans and broccoli in different water colours and painted their canvases to create amazing shapes and designs.

The students of class UKG were thrilled to make beautiful trees through vegetable printing. The tiny tots thoroughly enjoyed this activity of dipping florets of broccoli into water colours and then imprinting them on paper. They felt ticklish as they rubbed the little florets on their soft palms.

The students of class 1 made their own beautiful flower garden by vegetable printing. They added caterpillars and colourful butterflies by using different vegetables and mixing them with watercolours. The activity was combined with a puzzle in which they had to identify some of the vegetables. Seeing the beaming smiles after making their own colourful gardens was indeed a pleasure.

The students of class 2 made vibrant butterflies by dipping sliced lady finger into paint and then stamping them onto paper in ordered patterns. They also had a class discussion on the importance of eating green vegetables.

The students of class 3 were taught how to beautify a cloth by doing vegetable printing. They brought different vegetable cut-outs and used them creatively to make different imprints by using poster colours. They got a chance to show their creativity and also helped them to relate to our traditional arts.
