TAFS MUN 2022

WE THE VOICE OF THE PEOPLE

Written by The International Press of TAFS MUN 2022

Liberty, Equality and Fraternity were the guiding principles of the French revolution of 1749. Though the revolution is centuries old, the relevance of these virtues in modern society is still prevalent. These were the guiding principles of the TAFS MUN 2022. Through a series of debates and discussions, these virtues were echoed throughout the conference.

Opening Ceremony- The day started off with breakfast followed by an opening ceremony with Chief Guest Smt. Meira Kumar who gave an inspirational speech in the event. We also heard a speech by the school MUN coordinator Mrs. Sumita Balram and the Co-Secretary Generals of the event. The opening ceremony filled the delegates with enthusiasm to begin the conference with the song Ilahi and finally everybody sat in their respective committees.

The United Nations General Assembly was one of the most happening committees in the conference, the agenda, per se is one most pressing issue of the ongoing decade- “Deliberation on China’s growing geopolitical influence with special emphasis on economic and industrial monopolies”. The perception of China’s rise in the world forms a kaleidoscope in itself which could be clearly witnessed in the proceedings of the committee. The committee clearly showed the changing waters of geopolitics. Throughout the commencement the delegates showed how the world is divided into the western and the eastern blocks. The two blocks in themselves are fundamentally opposing in many ways-how to run the economy, how to administer nations and many other aspects.

On the first day the delegates of All India Political Party Meet focused on the opening speeches and what they stand on. One of the delegates, Lalan Singh, talked about the increasing unemployment and the difficulties faced by the middle class. Islamophobia is the reason that muslims are usually associated with terrorism or such activities. The major highlight of day 1 was noticeably when N.Chandrababu Naidu mentioned the 2006 Bhopal bomb blast where BJP mentioned that, “Hindus cannot be terrorists”. On day 2 the committee focused on the evolution of secularism and gender equality in Indian democracy. Mamta Banerjee talked about the importance of democratic government and its need for the growth of democracy. Nirmala Sitharaman the finance minister of India, asked Uddhav Thackery if BJP supports Hinduism as his party has an image of Kattar Hindutva as his father stated. In response Uddhav Thackeray said,” Meri party hindutva ka support zarror karti hai mandir masjid ko todna aur patthar bazi nahi, SHIV SENA WASTED 25 YEARS IN ALL ANCE W TH BHARATIYA JANATA PARTY.” The discussion was heated up at as a few politicians counter attacked Mamta Banerjee by raising the issue of genocide of Kashmiri Pandit . As various other conventional issues like “the hijab ban, triple talaq” were also raised, heated discussion on gender equality took place.

The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime is a global leader in addressing the issue of illicit drug use and transnational crime. This is why delegates have made striking arguments which have led to several solutions. The first day consisted of the delegates giving their GSL speeches. The second day was when the topic of legalisation occurred. It was evident that legalising drugs should not be a public policy choice that lends itself to a simple discussion.

Chaos. There is no better way to summarise the CCC. Day one’s session with a national emergency being declared in the country due to the disastrous nuclear detonation in Delhi. Mass panic and looting ensued, and delegates rushed to tackle the worsening situation. The representatives had lengthy discussions about suggestions to avert the crisis. On the second day, Chennai was bombed. A national lockdown was instituted, and a mole, the press secretary, was discovered, within the NSC, and executed. Delegates blamed Pakistan and China, before news of simultaneous explosions in Karachi and Beijing. We were on the verge of nuclear war, with India on one side and Pakistan and China on the other.

The United Nations Human Rights Council is an international governmental body working to promote universal respect and rights for every human being across the globe regardless of their race, nationality, sex, etc. Through this agenda delegates are expected to propose solutions for protecting and safeguarding the rights of inmates imprisoned world round as they are living in inhumane conditions, without proper health or sanitation facilities, being tortured, raped and sometimes worse. Delegations like the DPRK, and Qatar, believe in rehabilitation of inmates but only to a reasonable extent. They follow a more realistic, than an idealistic approach, sentencing offenders according to the degree of the crimes committed by them. Most of the delegates were holding back while others like Qatar, New Zealand, the DPRK and USA were controlling the flow of the debate. Simultaneously, delegations like Eritrea and New Zealand tried to exclude countries like Korea and USA from the bloc.

Closing Ceremony- The closing ceremony was a beautiful yet heartbreaking ceremony as every person attending it had multitudes of emotions going on. The ceremony was graced by the Chief Guest, Justice K. G. Balakrishnan’s presence along with a Special Guest. The students of TAFS put on a great cultural show before announcing the winners of all committees and the best delegation trophies. We saw delegates going back home with a smile on their faces and loads of new thing to take back from the three-day conference.

The TAFS MUN 2022 was surely an enriching experience for all those who were a part of it. The delegates, the Executive Board, the organizing committee members, the International Press surely formed memories that we will cherish for a lifetime. The secretariat and the organizing committee should be applauded for their efforts, such a successful conference. The knowledge gained in the conference will help and guide the delegates in their future MUN conferences.

THANK YOU!

'Lead On' - Leadership Summit was organised by Tagore International School, Vasant Vihar, on 5th December 2022.The main theme of this year's 'Lead On' was 'Ethics Engagement Excellence'. Two student representatives from over 50 schools across Delhi took part in it. Our school was represented by Head Girl - Shubhangini Mehta of class XII D and Head Boy – Samyak Hilsayan of class XII A.

The summit had two guest speakers, Mr. Deepak Vohra, IFS (ex- Ambassador to Sudan) and Mr. Gaurav Aggarwal, founder 1Mg. Both the speakers enlightened young minds on topics such as leadership qualities, career and patriotism.

The summit organized several leadership games to enhance one's ability to think, co-operate and lead. These games included the famous 'Prisoner's Dilemma' game, an interesting treasure hunting game named ‘Scavenger Hunt’, and a leadership activity among others.

The students who were already leaders of their respective schools, met other leaders to interact, exchange ideas and negotiating shared challenges. They were motivated to think beyond their horizons for a better future ahead.

THE INTERNATIONAL DAY OF PERSONS WITH DISABILITIES

The Junior School celebrated the 'International Day of Persons with Disabilities', on 03 Dec 2022, with great enthusiasm, at school.

The students of classes 3-5 participated in drawing and poster making activities on the theme. A sensitization drive on the significance of this day was conducted for students of classes UKG-2. The students of class 5 enthusiastically presented a short skit on how to support a person with disability,  for these young tafsians. The objective was to help inculcate empathy towards people with disabilities and to make them feel accepted and celebrated. The children also learned about the difficulties faced by people with disabilities in their daily lives.

It was an educational and empowering experience for the students and a positive step towards an inclusive culture at school.
