      CELEBRATING SCIENCE ( JR WING)

      CELEBRATING SCIENCE ( JR WING)

Reason, observation and experience are the holy trinity of science!

In view of the National Science Day on 28th Feb, the junior wing celebrated science and the spirit of science by doing various activities and experiments in their online classes and at home. Each experiment was carefully planned keeping in mind the standard sequence ie. the objective, the hypothesis, the experiment, recording of data and finally the conclusion drawn. The fun filled week-long event was conducted from 22nd Feb to 26 Feb 2021.

Students of UKG were not to be left behind as they donned their scientist hats and went about checking whether their objects were going to sink or float in water. As leaves floated  and pebbles sank, the little ones soon concluded that everything doesn’t float and some objects which are heavier will sink!

Class 1 students chose to observe a common house plant like tulsi or rose. They looked out for features like thickness/ hardness of the stem, colour/ texture/ shape/ smell of  the leaves and size of the plant etc.  They came to the conclusion that stems are usually brown and hard while  leaves are (usually) green and soft. The children also concluded that a happy plant has bright upright leaves and a sad plant has droopy leaves !

Class 2 students included colour mixing in their science experiment called ‘Travelling Colours’. They used 2 glasses of coloured water and some folded tissue paper to make the water ‘travel’ to an empty glass. And VOILA! The colour that they got was a different one! It was a very interesting observation and the students were all wide eyed with the magical science and left wondering ‘Is that how ice-creams, candies, toys, paints and lipsticks etc have so many NEW colours?’

The students of Class 3 took up the topic of ‘Ice Melt’ experiment in which they tried to find out which object is most useful in order to melt the ice quickly. They used salt, sugar, lemon juice and water. The students kept a watch on their ice cubes and recorded the time taken up by each piece of ice to melt. Their experiment led to the discovery that salt melts ice pretty fast. It was an interesting conclusion because in many countries, salt is sprinkled on snow to melt it and clear up the main roads, footpaths and home entrance etc.

Class 4 students followed the scientific theory behind solubility of different substances found in the kitchens. They used turmeric, salt, sugar, oil etc to test whether each substance  would dissolve or not .Water was used as the medium. They vigorously swirled their spoons and waited patiently for it to settle so that they could record their observation. Finally, they concluded that all objects do not dissolve in water.  And oil doesn’t dissolve, but floats on top! Hmm… no wonder the fishes die when there is an oil spill in the ocean waters! This is a very useful observation especially for climate science!

Which bridge is the strongest? Posed with this question, the students of Class 5 tested the strength of various bridges in the experiment ‘Building bridges’. They folded paper into various shapes and tested it’s strength using coins (representing vehicles). For balancing purpose, books were used on the two ends to manage the paper bridge. The students counted the coins which they could place before the bridge collapsed. Recording of observations was done as to which type of bridge was holding maximum number of coins. Hence, they arrived at the conclusion that triangular shapes have a lot of strength and can bear maximum weight. No wonder ‘triangle’ is the favourite shape of architects and used in the constructions of bridges, electrical towers, internet towers all around the world!

Overall it was a fun filled ‘science in the air’ week where children used the ‘hands-on’ approach to learn how scientists use observation to collect and record data, which enables them to  develop and test various theories.

The important thing is to never stop questioning – Albert Einstein

Five  students of class 9th attended an Internet Awareness webinar organized by Nehru Planetarium With Experts from ” Jagoo Teen Organization” on February 09, 2021 . Keeping the need of today’s youth in mind the Internet Safety webinar included guidelines on how to stay safe, online.

Feedback on “Together for a better Internet” workshop

Webinar - Be a Responsible Netizen

The webinar was very informative as it briefed everyone on how to stay safe from the cyber related crimes, cyber bullying, and other cyber related problems. It also talked about how excess usage of internet brings about behavioral change, and development of bad habits in people. It told us about the De-addiction Centers, which have come up to deal with these issues. They schooled us on how to stay safe while surfing the internet and also on how to pass on this knowledge to others, to make the internet a safer place.

          Aditya Kushwaha, IX A

The webinar was very informative and interesting. I have learnt the rules that to be followed on Internet. Teachers were resourceful and make us understand the importance of  internet safety with the help of some examples. The workshop was interactive with colourful presentation and easy to grasp information. I liked the webinar very much.

          Nakul Tanwar, IX B

The webinar was full of knowledge about the basic and main etiquettes and responsibilities of the netizens, members of the association told us about all the precautions and steps to be taken while using online means of service and they also told about many steps that should be taken while doing online transactions and while using social media platforms, They even explained us about how to deal with cyber bullying, The even added how to use online games with full safety. I liked the way they answered all the queries of the students and even involved them in the discussion, many of my queries were solved and I am sure that these steps and precautions given by the members of Jagoo teens will help me in my further life. And at the end of the workshop we all even took a netizen’s pledge.Lastly want to conclude by saying that I am very thankful to my teachers and school authority for providing me with such an opportunity of attending such an amazing and helpful webinar organized by Jagoo teens. Thank you,

          Swati, IX C

I found it a very informative and well-explained webinar. They told us about some key measures for using the internet safely. With the help of videos and real-life examples, they told us about some common ways by which cybercriminals attack people. The stats that they showed us about cybercrime shocked me. This made me more alert and careful while being on the internet.

          Garv Jain, IX-D

Internet as we all know is an essential part of our everyday life. However, there is no guarantee that it is completely safe. On 9th February, 2021, Nehru Planetarium collaborated with some mentors of Jaago Teen and an online workshop was held.

Real life examples were given, certain videos were shown and the topics, rules, guidelines were discussed briefly. As we were proceeding with the meeting, many other people who had interacted with Jaago Teen before represented their views and talked.

It was remarkably thrilling and informative. It was rightfully demonstrated that internet safety is much more important than any number of likes or followers.

I enjoyed the way teachers taught us about cyber safety. It was child friendly and very attractive too. I loved the topic of cyberbullying and setting passwords but, I personally think that they should’ve also added the topic of different types of viruses which are used to hack social media accounts and also suggesting any tips that how should we tackle them if our account is hacked by strangers. The teachers were very gentle, noble and polite. It was wonderful appearing in the webinar and I suggest everyone to attend it as it is very helpful… THANK YOU

                    MATH WEEK - JR SCHOOL

                    Math Week  ( 27-29 Jan. 2021)

‘The only way to learn mathematics is to do mathematics’ Paul Halmos

Math is an integral part of our daily lives. Math activities not only help in making the subject more lively enjoyable but also enhance conceptual understanding. The Junior School  Math Week is a special event where all the classes form UKG-V indulge in a celebration of Math. This year the event was organised from 27-29 Jan. 2021.

The little ones of UKG played with shapes and made colourful ‘shape robots’. In the process they learnt about various mathematical shapes, colours, body parts  and refined their motor skills too. The children posed with their multi-coloured robots with smiling faces.

Class I students integrated Math with Art and made bright and colourful flowers with simple math facts written in each petal. The centre of attraction was to be a number between 1-100. The activity ’Blooming numbers’ helped the little ones to understand the different concepts of numbers.

Class II students picked up real objects from their surroundings and used them as non - standard units of measurement for the activity ‘Measurement is Fun’.

Ideas flowed fast as children came up with various interesting suggestions which could be used to measure a certain length. They portrayed their creative measurement units on sheets and recorded their observations on the sheets.

Class III students built a ‘House of Facts’ using multiplication and division facts. Their house was also built of mathematical shapes only. The children learnt how to play around with number facts and made small little ‘fact families’. The children thoroughly enjoyed building houses with numbers!

The students of Class IV had a fun time weighing objects in the ‘Weigh to Go’ activity. The students had also made weighing balance with the help of clothes hangar. The objective was to use these hand -made weighing scales to measure simple household objects with toffees as non -standard weights. The students were very excited and had lots of fun recording their ‘sweet’ measurements!

The activity ‘How I spend my Day’ for students of class V brought about a strategic change in the thinking of the students as they had to make a list of activities that take up an entire day of  24 hours. They also learnt how to fold a circle in 12 parts without using a scale and then presented their work in the form of colourful  pie charts. It was a thoughtful activity designed to inculcate management of time amongst students.

All the students thoroughly enjoyed doing the activities and a sense of achievement could be felt in the wonderful artistic work presented by them with clear observations, methodical data recording, careful colouring, cutting, folding and pasting work.
