HERITAGE WALKS- CLASSES III-V (26 SEP –
04 OCT 2016)
In
order to create awareness about our rich cultural heritage, history and
traditions ‘Heritage Walks’ were
organized, for the students of classes III – V, from 26 Sep to 04 Oct 2016. Keeping
in mind the significance of including
museums and monuments as rich sources of learning about our heritage, we make
outdoor and experiential learning an important part of our curriculum.
Prior
to each ‘Heritage Walk’ an orientation session was conducted by the teachers in their classes, through power point
presentations and activities. The visit was followed by an interactive
discussion in school the next day where the children did worksheets related to
their ‘Heritage Walk’ and shared interesting insights and their experiences.
CLASS III- VISIT TO CRAFTS MUSEUM, PRAGATI MAIDAN (28
& 29 SEP 2016)
The children
of class III visited the crafts museum to learn about various types of art and
crafts of India. They learnt about pottery, saw potter’s wheel,
loom machine and also saw various handmade wooden toys. They acquired knowledge
about various kinds of embroidery patterns of different states, at this
prestigious museum. They also saw an exhibition on ‘Textiles of Chiapas’,
Mexico. Children enjoyed the audio- visual presentation on ‘Wooden crafts of
India’ and performances by artists of Orissa. They also did an art activity in
which they drew WORLI designs made on the walls of the museum. They had a
pleasant time appreciating the rich heritage of country.
CLASS IV- VISIT TO HAUZ KHAS COMPLEX (26 & 27 SEP
2016)
‘Hauz
Khas’ literally translates into ‘royal water tank’ and the main attraction
there is the huge water reservoir. The Hauz Khas complex houses the Madrasa, a
small mosque, the main tomb and six dome shaped pavilions.
The
students enjoyed the trip a lot and they learned about the technology that
existed so many years back, in terms of water conservation and manmade 'cool'
buildings which were well lit and ventilated. It was indeed a pleasure for the
students to have witnessed first-hand, India’s living history in the form of
such grand monuments. The students’ curiosity was satiated by the well written
information boards which were kept near each of the monuments. Children
immensely gained from this educationally and culturally rich programme.
CLASS V- VISIT TO GANDHI SMRITI (30 SEP & 04 OCT
2016)
“My life is my message” – is
what the children noticed first when they entered the Gandhi Smriti. These
words spoken by the Mahatma were engraved on a sculpture at the museum which is
housed in the Birla House where Gandhiji spent the last 144 days of his life.
The children saw the Martyr’s Column erected there in remembrance of the spot
where Gandhiji was assassinated. The children were awestruck to learn about the
Mahatma’s great but simple life and eagerly read the information displayed in
different areas there. They also made notes of their observations and later
discussed them in class. This Heritage Walk gave the children the unique
experience of knowing the Mahatma deeply and closely as well as teaching an
invaluable lesson about the essence of Gandhiji’s principles.
