25th Vasant Valley Drama Festival 2016

25th Vasant Valley Drama Festival 2016

“To enter a theatre for a performance is to be inducted into a magical space, to be ushered into the sacred arena of imagination”

And into such a magical space were twenty of our class V students inducted when they were chosen to represent our school in the 25th Vasant Valley Drama Festival, held over a period of three days from 22nd to 24th August 2016 at The Air Force Auditorium, Subroto Park.

With seventeen schools taking part in this theatre festival, the experience gained by the students was indeed immeasurable. Based on the theme of ‘Jaldi Jaldi’, the schools depicted their take on the given topic, during this festival.

Prior to the actual festival, the students attended a workshop in July wherein they learned tips on how a play should be presented, pointers on voice modulation, dialogue delivery and expressions through gestures.

History students of class XII went on a historical trip to the famed pilgrimage – Nizamuddin Dargah and later to Humayun’s Tomb on 23rd of August 2016. The winding lanes of Nizamuddin welcomed us with the waft of the fragrance of roses. The dargah was a humble and peaceful place where people from all over the world visited.

By late morning, we proceeded to Humayun’s tomb where all students marveled at the sheer magnitude of the structures that were majestic yet had such intricate niches and carvings. By noon, we left this culturally rich land back to our homes to create new history.

              70th Independence Day 2016-17

              70TH INDEPENDENCE DAY 2016-17

The puny Indian concealed the bravest heart within his fragile frame. The churning had begun, the rumble had started .But the turmoil was tempered with the strength of the non-violence, and it was coloured in the hues of sacrifice. Every man, woman and child was aglow and in tune with the spirit of the times.

It was to celebrate this spirit of sacrifice that the students and staff of The Air Force School came together on 12 August 2016, commemorating 70 glorious days of freedom. As the air reverberated with the spirit of sacrifice, the enthusiastic participants eagerly awaited the arrival of the Chief Guest, Air Cmde Rajan Sood VSM, Principal Director AV and Mrs Rachna Sood.

The day unfolded with the unfurling of the Tricolor and everybody proudly sang the National Anthem.

The Principal Ms Amita Gupta, welcomed the esteemed guests and emphasized that we are fortunate to be born in free India, but, we should remember that freedom comes with responsibilities. Ma’am said that she had great faith that the students of TAFS will sincerely perform their duties and contribute to make India a great nation.

After the welcome address, the five houses brought alive the trauma, the struggle and the sacrifice that our bravehearts made to achieve freedom. The cultural programe, “SANGHARSH KE RASTE AZAADI KE VASTE”, took everyone down the memory lane showcasing the Struggle of the Tribals, Indian Renaissance, Partition of Bengal, the Swadeshi and the Khilafat movement and the Satyagrah.

The momentous day continued with the inspiring words of the chief guest. Sir reminded us that though we have achieved a lot in these 70 years , we still have to keep striving for national development. His words filled every young heart with the feeling of patriotism.

The school also released the school magazine ‘The Aravalian’ for the academic session 2015-2016, on this occasion. It was a moment of pride as the creative team of ‘The Aravalian’, consisting of budding writers, editors and artists shook hands with the chief guest.

The programme concluded with the vote of thanks by the Middle School Coordinator, Ms Lomina Rajiv.

                  Van Mahotsav - Celebrating Life

                  Van Mahotsav- Celebrating Life

The true meaning of life is to plant trees, under whose shade you do not expect to sit”

Van Mahotsav is an annual tree-planting festival in India. To inculcate the awareness about  trees among students and to  portray the need of planting and tending of trees, as trees are one of the best ways to prevent global warming and reduce pollution , Van Mahotsav was celebrated in school. A special assembly was planned by the   Environment Club of our school . The programme highlighted the need for conserving forest land and students created awareness among students by organizing poems, speeches and song etc. The highlight of the programme  was the skit that showcased the plight of Indian Farmers who are forced to sell their land to greedy contracters who cut trees risking the lives of so many living organisms dependent on that piece of land. It concluded with the message and a pledge that “ Each One of us will contribute our bit. to save our Environment, “ weather its cleaning the surroundings, growing trees , car pooling or any other means.

Keeping in view, the concept of “learning By doing” , tree Plantation was organized for students of class VI, wherein they  planted saplings and vowed to take care of trees. It gave the students a feeling that trees are an integral part of our life. Students were taught about the planting of trees during the festival serves various purposes like providing alternative fuel, increase production of food resources, helps create shelter-belts around fields to increase productivity, provide food for cattle, offers shade and decorative landscapes, helps conserves soil deterioration, etc.

English Department Activity - Puppet Show

                    English Department Activity

                    Puppet Show

A puppet Show was organized by the English Department for the students of class VI on 19th August 2016. The students were asked to present a poem from their textbook with the help of puppets. The students divided themselves into groups where they allocated a task to each member of the group, and then presented collectively as a group. The intention was to encourage students to understand the poem, unleash their creativity and make relevant puppets and then present the poem in front of an audience. The values imparted through the Activity were team spirit, accountability for individual contribution and a spirit of healthy competition. The students gave mesmerizing performances, both in terms of the puppets they made along with the paraphernalia their performance needed, and also the sense of help and cooperation they extended to each other despite being part of different competing teams.

Each performance was judged on the following rubrics:

                    ·         Choice of Poem

                    ·         Creativity

                    ·         Puppets/ props used

                    ·         Team spirit

Each performance was judged by a teacher from the English faculty.

The performers presented their poems using the various puppets and other related props. The performances were fantastic, especially keeping in mind their tender age and inexperience {this was their first attempt at something like this}. The poems were presented with complete understanding of the content, mood and morals they depicted. The Activity gave them a wonderful opportunity to showcase their creativity, talent and display excellent camaraderie and teamwork. The students enjoyed the Activity thoroughly.

70th Independence Day Celebrations - Junior School

70TH INDEPENDENCE DAY CELEBRATIONS- JUNIOR WING

                        12.08.2106

On Friday, 12th August 2016, the Junior Wing of The Air Force School celebrated the 70th Independence Day, at the Aravalli Hall, with a short programme by the Class IV students.

These celebrations began with a prayer to the almighty expressing the oneness of all religions. It was followed by a skit through which the students conveyed about the huge sacrifices that our freedom fighters made in order to attain this freedom which we enjoy today. The skit also emphasized on the relevance of the term ‘freedom’ in today’s context. Where once we fought for freedom from the British, it is now independence from several social ills that we seek; hence the theme of the drama presented was ‘Freedom from hunger, from dirt and from illness’. This was followed by the rendition of a patriotic song, ‘ge Hkkjr oklh fy[krs gS vkt u;k bfrgkl…….’, by the school choir. The celebrations ended with a scintillating dance drama based on the infamous Jallianwala Bagh massacre.

                              The Wordsmiths' Meet

                              ‘The Wordsmiths’ Meet’ - 05 Aug 2016

On 5 Aug 2016, ‘The Wordsmiths’ Meet’, an annual English literary event, was organised by the Junior Wing of The Air Force School.

This event aimed to encourage children to participate in the spirit of forging new bonds of friendship and teamwork and to celebrate this wonderful process of growing together.

This year’s theme was ‘Fantasies are Forever’. Fantasy is the fertile soil for the creation of mythical and fascinating creatures, characters with unusual abilities and interesting discoveries and challenges along the way. The only limit to a fantasy book or film is imagination as ‘everything is possible’ within the fantasy genre.

Three different activities were planned for the students of classes III, IV and V:

‘Fantasia’- a poetry recitation activity for class III

Fee-Fie-Fo-Fum’- a debate for Class IV

Epilogue’- a short skit for class V

The event began with the ceremonial lighting of the lamp amidst chanting of ‘shlokas’, followed by the felicitation of the guests. The choir struck the right notes with the melodious song ‘One moment in time’ after which the events began at different venues. Students of 8 prestigious schools of Delhi participated in these events .Each event was presided over by two guests who applauded the efforts of the students and also gave their valuable feedback to them. The young ‘Wordsmiths’ excelled themselves be the poems from the land of fairytales  or the hilarious  sequels of famous stories that they showcased as  short skits. The young debaters came well prepared with their ‘for’ and ‘against’ arguments on the topic ’You’re never too old for fairy tales’.

The programme concluded with the valedictory function during which participation certificates were distributed to all participants.
