SCIENCE WEEK CELEBRATIONS – JUNIOR WING (04-08 DEC. 2023)
“Science is magic that works.” - Kurt Vonnegut
Science is a subject that helps children understand things from all five senses. It keeps them curious about the world around them. To develop scientific temperament among students and to satisfy their curiosity, the Junior Wing, TAFS celebrated science week from 04 – 08 December 2023 by doing various activities and experiments.
Our little kindergarteners of UKG enjoyed experimenting new experience of how some things float and some sink through a simple experiment “Sink and Float”. They got different things from their boxes to check whether they sink or float. They were really enthralled by the observation as it was a real magic for them.
Class 1 students chose to observe the process of germination through a simple experiment “The Miracle of seed”. The children were told to bring seeds soaked overnight along with a transparent glass and some cotton. After a few days, they will be able to see the seeds germinating in the class itself. They also made an observation sheet in which they drew things required by a seed to grow.
To check the Solubility of different things, Class 2 students used salt, sugar, oil, coffee and turmeric powder and tried to dissolve them in water. They made simple observations that out of all these, salt, sugar and coffee were soluble and oil and turmeric powder were insoluble in water.
To experience the magic of science themselves, the students of Class 3 did an experiment “Inflation of balloon”. They put vinegar in an empty bottle and baking soda in balloon. When both these reacted, it produced Carbon-di-oxide gas due to which the balloon was inflated and blown up. Through this simple experiment, children observed that air (gas) is invisible and it occupies space.
Class 4 students did an activity ‘ORS preparation and Uses” in which they prepared ORS (Oral Rehydration Solution) themselves by mixing one teaspoon sugar and a pinch of salt in one glass lukewarm water. They also came to know about importance of hydration and balance of minerals in human body. It was also a wonderful activity to develop life skills in children.
The students of Class 5 tested the strength of various bridges in the experiment “Building Bridges”. They folded paper into various shapes and tested it’s strength using coins (representing vehicles). Books were used for balancing. The students counted the coins which they could place before the bridge collapsed. Recording of observations was also done on an A4 sheet. Finally, they arrived at the conclusion that triangular shapes can bear maximum weight. That’s why triangular shape is used to construct bridges, electrical towers etc. all around the world.
It was a fun filled week for all the children as they learnt how scientists use observation to collect and record data, which enables them to develop various theories.
