Visit to the National Philately Museum-Class IV

Visit to the National Philately Museum

 Class IV – 25th- 27th October 2023

Over a period of three days from October 25th to 27th, around 200 students of Class IV visited the National Philatelic Museum, Dak Bhavan, Sansad Marg, as part of the Heritage Walk, organised by the school.

The National Philatelic Museum has an extensive stamp collection including the first stamp issued in India by the Sindh Dak in 1854 and stamps issued before Independence by the rulers of the princely states. All Commemorative Postage Stamps issued by Department of Post since independence in 1947 are displayed in chronological order in the Museum and thematic stamps under specific themes like Mahatma Gandhi, Science and Technology etc are also displayed.

The postage stamp, which begun as a piece of paper in token of receipt of postage, has assumed additional functions. It is a means of celebrating and promoting national heritage and plays a significant role as a brand image of postal administration and a statement of sovereignty of a nation. Philately is a hobby that sharpens one’s knowledge of the world and cultivates a meticulous and focused attention to detail. It also helps in making friends across boundaries and age-barriers.

Each batch of children were accompanied by three staff members and were given a guided tour of the Museum. The students found the entire experience enriching and memorable, delving into the rich history of stamps and understanding the science of Philately. The visit was very well organised and included a plethora of activities to keep the students engaged- from viewing a short film on the origin of stamps and the science of philately to writing out post cards to your loved ones and even participating in a stamp design drawing competition, for which the winners were given colourful pouches. Even refreshments were provided to the young ones, keeping them grinning from ear to ear!

Museums are meant to engage and educate the community, and this visit did just that, even giving the students a message by way of an oft repeated quote-

“Be like a postage stamp. Stick to one thing until you get there”- Josh Billings

                      Mental Health Awareness Week

                      Mental Health Awareness Week
‘You Grow through what you Go through’

As WHO states that mental health is a universal human right. It can only come in effect if right from the early years knowledge is imparted, awareness is raised and actions are driven that promote everyone’s mental health. One such initiate was put to practice at TAFS Junior school, as we celebrated ‘Mental Health Awareness Week’ from 10 October to 14 October 2023.

The week was power-packed with various activities for students to promote a positive atmosphere at school. Through poster & slogan colouring activity, students understood the importance of one’s feelings and emotions. Children made their own individual gratitude checklist which helped them in feeling content with what they have. Through various role-plays & enactments children understood that seeking help in stressful situations is the first step to a healthy living.

To celebrate the week further, mindful breathing & meditation exercises were performed by all students. Children were also helped in identifying safe places & safe adults at school. These activities will be surely taken forward & made a way of living for our young learners. As our childrens’ wellness is everyone’s matter & it’s time to accept & prioritize mental health of our children as much as their physical health.

                          (10-13 OCT 2023)

Gandhi Smriti is a museum dedicated to Mahatma Gandhi, situated on Tees January Road, where Mahatma Gandhi spent the last 144 days of his life before he was assassinated on 30 January 1948. The children of Class V visited the museum on 10th, 11th, 12th and 13th Oct 23, in batches of 60-70 students. As the nation paid tribute to Gandhiji by conducting various events, the children of TAFS too, dedicated a day in honouring his life and legacy with this visit.

The aim of this programme was to include outdoor and experiential learning as part of their curriculum and to create awareness about the contribution of Mahatma Gandhi in the struggle for Independence and the cultural heritage of India. Museums inspire young minds and during this visit, Gandhiji’s philosophy of truth, nonviolence and simplicity, often referred to as "Satyagraha," which has inspired generations worldwide continued to work the same wonders on these impressionable minds. The children quite enjoyed the museum looking at the memorabilia and artefacts kept there reflecting the simplicity and greatness of a humble leader. The children were shown an informative documentary on Gandhiji’s life. The museum volunteers took the children on a guided tour through the museum, citing interesting anecdotes from Gandhi ji’s life and explaining every item of display in great detail. It was indeed an enriching experience for the children of Class 5, full of fun and some great learning too!

                                          ‘My Body, My Pride’

A workshop was conducted by the school counsellor for all students on class V on Wednesday, 4 October 2023. The workshop was about body image, growing up and building a positive self-esteem. Girls were further guided about menstrual health and hygiene.

The discussions were an attempt to make children aware of the forthcoming bodily changes that adolescence brings along. As rightly believed that adolescence is a period of stress and storm, thus this productive interaction with the students was to provide them with right knowledge that can help them adapt, accommodate and take pride in these changes.

Various videos, group games & open-ended discussion was involved in this process. Children enthusiastically participated in the discussion & clarified their apprehensions. The workshop appeared fruitful as children finished the discussions by creating a positive self-image & body positivity.

Gandhi Jayanti Celebrations in TAFS Jr Wing

Mahatma Gandhi is known as the ‘Father of the Nation’ for his contribution to the national struggle for Independence. His birth anniversary is celebrated every year as a national Festival. Gandhi Jayanti is an important celebration in the curriculum of TAFS where his principles of truth and nonviolenceare remembered and reinforced. To commemorate Gandhiji’s 154th birth anniversary the following activities were organized.

The little TAFSIANS of class UKG made his signature specs with bangles &ice-cream stick pasted on Tricoloured sheets. The importance of simplicity was depicted with this activity.

The students of Class I made stick puppets depicted the three wise monkeys which represent the principles of ‘see no evil’, ‘hear no evil’ and ‘speak no evil’. These principles were discussed with their relevance in our day-to-day experiences.

The students of Class II made charkhas (spinning wheel) as an art activity. The charkha symbolises self-sufficiency and freedom. It was discussed in the classes how one should not shy away from doing one’s work.

The students of Class III organised a Quiz on the Life and principles of Mahatma Gandhi. The children learned about the importance of peace, tolerance and social equality with this quiz.

The students of Class IV made bookmarks in the shape of things associated with his memories like his beloved charkha, his distinct spectacles, his walking stick or the figure of the great man himself. The students wrote his famous quotes on the bookmarks like ‘My life is my message’, ‘The weak can never forgive’ and ‘The future depends on what we do in the present’. The bookmarks encouraged the young minds to pick up a book and read.

The children of class V made a poster titled, "Remembering Bapu" comprising of images of Gandhiji and memorabilia associated with him along with one of his famous quotes. The activity enabled the children to know more about his life struggles and seek inspiration from him to lead a remarkable life.

                                              "Let's Meet Our Helpers"

With an aim of stimulating the student's imagination and enhancing their social development skills, our Class 1 students met the helpers of our school on 29th Sep, 2023. Educating students about the community helpers and the kinds of roles they play in our daily lives, is highly important.

Learners met different helpers like a Gardener, Electrician, Plumber, Nurse, Driver and Ayah didi. They explained how they make our lives better, keep us and the community safe and help our community function better. Students enjoyed their learning about the helpers, their tools and asked them several questions during the interaction. They were also felicitated with handmade cards and chocolates by our students.
